Animation is teamwork: dozens of artists can touch a single film, game or 30-second spot, and the credits list all of them. Your resume has to show which part was yours. Studios and agencies check your specialty, from 2D and 3D character work to motion graphics and rigging, the software and engine you animate in, and how much finished work you deliver on schedule. Shots you owned, animations you shipped and the productions that went out with them answer that in figures any lead can compare.
How to Write an Animator Resume - Key Takeaways
- Keep to 1 page in newest-first order (2 only after about 10 years of credits), with your specialty, such as 2D Animator or Technical Animator, in the headline under your name.
- Open with 2 to 3 lines that name your medium, your years, your main software and your biggest production credit with a number.
- Count your work in shots, seconds of finished animation, game animations, rigs or spots delivered, and say which stage of each shot was yours.
- List the programs the job ad names, such as Maya, Toon Boom Harmony, After Effects or Unreal Engine, with your skills and again inside your bullets.
- Send your reel link through the application form and your cover letter, and make your bullets describe the shots it shows.
- Put software certificates under Certificates, naming the issuer and date, then run the file through an ATS resume checker before you apply.
What studios look for in an animator resume
An animation lead or studio recruiter reads your resume to decide whether your reel is worth opening, and then whether the work on it was really yours. The BLS lists creating graphics and animation with computer programs, working with a team of animators and artists on a movie, game or visual effect, and editing your work on feedback from directors, game designers or clients as core duties. It also notes that artists in animated movies and video games often specialize in characters or in scenery and background design, so your specialty belongs in the first line a reader sees.
Build the page from these sections, using the headings the resume designs print:
- Name, headline with your specialty (for example, 2D Animator or Technical Animator) and contact details
- A short summary under your name: 2 to 3 lines, no heading of its own
- Work Experience, with studio jobs and freelance contracts in 1 timeline, newest first
- Skills, with the programs and engines you animate in
- Certificates, if you hold a software certification
- Education, with your senior or thesis film while it is recent
- Optional: either Key Achievements or a Volunteer Experience section, plus Languages and Interests
Best format for an animator resume
Use the reverse-chronological resume format: newest job first, each with your title, the studio or client, the city and MM/YYYY dates. Animation careers climb in visible steps, from junior animator to animator, senior, lead and supervisor, and animators can move up, per the BLS, to supervisory and directorial roles. Newest-first order lets a recruiter follow that climb without hunting for it, and it handles freelance contracts just as well as staff jobs.
- Best for most animatorsReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
Stay on 1 page until you have about 10 years of production credits. A lead or 3D animator with credits across film, TV and games can run to 2, provided page 1 holds the 2 latest roles. Let the reel carry the visuals: creative resume templates with 1 accent color and a clear grid still look like an artist made them, and screening software can still read every line.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page; 2 only with about 10+ years of production credits |
| Dates | MM/YYYY for every job and contract, with Present for current work |
| Headline | Your specialty as studios title it: 2D Animator, Character Animator, Technical Animator |
| Production names | The project type in each bullet (episodic series, console game, 30-second spot); leave out titles still under NDA |
| Photo and personal details | Leave the headshot off for most US and Canadian studios; no age, marital status or Social Security number |
| File | PDF with your name in the file name, unless the posting asks for Word |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and your visual skill already shows in the reel, so give the resume's space to production numbers instead.
Where your demo reel link goes
When the application form has a field for a portfolio, website or reel, paste the link there, and put it again in the first paragraph of your cover letter. Then make the resume and the reel agree. If your reel opens on a creature fight from a game, a bullet under that job should name the fight, how many shots it took and what you did on them.
Animator resume summary vs. objective
Apply one test: if anyone has paid you to animate, on staff or freelance, write a resume summary; if your animation so far is student films and personal work, write a resume objective that names the role you want and your strongest proof. Either way, the first words should give your specialty and medium, because a studio hiring for game combat and one hiring for a preschool series are filling very different seats.
Animator resume summary formula
Specialty animator with X years in film, TV, games or advertising, working in software or engine. Your biggest production credit, with shots, seconds or animations delivered. A pipeline skill, a credential or the role you want next.
Example
3D animator with 7 years in preschool TV and mobile games, working in Maya and Unity. Animated 146 shots over 3 seasons of an episodic series, most of them approved within 2 rounds of notes. Trains new hires on the show's rig library.
Don't
Passionate animator with a love for storytelling and a strong eye for detail, eager to bring characters to life.
Do
2D animator with 4 years on commercials and explainer videos, working in Toon Boom Harmony and After Effects. Delivered 52 client spots in 2025 on deadlines of 5 to 10 business days.
The rewrite names the medium, the software, a volume and the pace a producer plans around.
How to write animator work experience bullets with numbers
Give each job 2 to 4 bullets, each opening with a verb. Animation is planned in shots, seconds and frames, so most of what you did already has a count attached. Turn those counts into achievements on your resume by adding what happened next: the shot went to final, the game shipped, the client came back for the next campaign.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Series and film shots | Shots, episodes, seconds of finished animation a week | Finished 38 shots on 4 episodes while holding a quota of 5 seconds a week. |
| Game animation | Animations delivered, characters, frame limits | Delivered 120 locomotion and combat animations for 6 enemy types, inside a 40-frame limit per attack. |
| Rigging and technical animation | Rigs built, controls, animators supported | Built 22 facial rigs with 60 controls each for a team of 15 animators. |
| Motion graphics and ads | Spots, versions, turnaround | Turned around 24 animated product videos a quarter, each exported in 3 aspect ratios. |
| Pipeline tools | Scripts written, minutes saved, artists using them | Wrote a Python batch-render tool for Maya that cut render prep from 90 to 15 minutes. |
| Reviews and notes | Note rounds per shot, approvals, retakes | Brought note rounds per shot from 4 to 2 by posting daily blocking passes for the director. |
Here is one 3D animator's entry with those numbers in place. The current job gets 4 bullets and the older one 2, and each names the kind of production, the software and the scale.
Work Experience
- Animated 146 shots across 3 seasons of a 3D preschool series in Maya, averaging 7 seconds of approved animation a week.
- Took 83% of shots to final within 2 rounds of director notes, against a team average of 3 rounds.
- Blocked and polished the lead character's 11-shot dance sequence for the season 2 finale, later cut into the show's trailer.
- Trained 4 junior animators on the show's rigs and walk-cycle standards over 2 seasons.
- Built 95 in-game animations (idles, runs, attacks) for 3 mobile titles in Unity, each under a 30-frame limit.
- Cut retargeting time per character from 2 days to 3 hours by setting up a shared skeleton in Maya.
Don't
Responsible for animating characters for the game.
Do
Animated 48 combat moves for 2 playable characters and hooked them into Unreal Engine animation blueprints ahead of a 6-week playtest.
A game lead wants the move count, the characters and the engine in 1 line.
Don't
Worked on several animated commercials.
Do
Animated 14 broadcast and social spots for 3 consumer brands in After Effects, each cut to 15-, 30- and 6-second versions.
Animation skills and software for your resume
Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the posting and that a bullet backs up. A rigging or technical animator role reads for skinning, constraints and scripting; a 2D role for drawing, timing and cut-out rigs; a motion graphics role for typography and compositing. Pick from the list below by the job you want, not by everything you have tried.
Hard skills for animators
- Keyframe animation
- Body mechanics and acting
- Lip sync
- Rigging and skinning
- 2D hand-drawn and cut-out animation
- Storyboarding and animatics
- Motion graphics
- Motion capture cleanup
- In-engine animation setup
- Python scripting for animation tools
Soft skills animation leads value
- Taking and applying notes
- Meeting weekly quotas
- Observation of real movement
- Working across departments
- Clear shot handoffs
- Learning new tools quickly
Put your software with your skills, then repeat each program inside a bullet so a lead sees what you made in it. O*NET flags Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Maxon Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects, Unreal Engine and Unity as in-demand tools for special effects artists and animators, and lists Python as a hot technology, which technical animators use to script tools. For 2D work, name Toon Boom Harmony or Adobe Animate if you animate in them, and add Blender only when the posting asks for it and you have used it on real work.
Animation software certifications: what to list
The BLS lists no license or certification for this job: your reel and your credits come first. A software certificate still helps an entry-level or career-change resume, where it proves hours in a program you have not used on a paid job yet. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and the month and year, and write the exam's subject in full, since "Adobe Certified Professional" alone does not say whether you passed After Effects or Animate.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Certified User (ACU) Maya | Autodesk | An entry-level exam on Maya; O*NET describes holders as having about 150 hours of instruction and hands-on use of the program. |
| Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Effects & Motion Graphics Using Adobe After Effects | Adobe | 1 exam, taken online or at a Certiport Authorized Testing Center. Adobe says certification typically takes 150 hours of hands-on experience and instruction. |
| Adobe Certified Professional in Multiplatform Animation Using Adobe Animate | Adobe | The 2D counterpart, with the same 150-hour guideline from Adobe. |
| Unity Certified Associate: Artist | Unity | An exam aimed at creators with a portfolio of Unity projects. Valid for 3 years from the certification date, then you retake the exam. |
| Toon Boom Associate Certification (Harmony) | Toon Boom, through its partner NOCTI | An exam on essential animation knowledge in Harmony Advanced or Premium; each voucher covers 3 attempts. |
Here is how 2 certificates look on a working animator's resume, newest first. A Unity certificate that has passed its 3-year mark comes off, or goes back on once you retake the exam.
Certificates
- Unity Certified Associate: Artist, Unity, 04/2024
- Autodesk Certified User (ACU) Maya, Autodesk, 11/2018
How to list an animation degree and your senior film
The BLS says the typical entry route for special effects artists and animators is a bachelor's degree in computer graphics, animation, fine arts or a related field, and animation programs often require classes in drawing, animation and film. The BLS also says employers usually prefer candidates with a good portfolio and strong technical skills, and that animation skills can be built through self-study. A degree in graphic design or illustration counts, then, as long as your reel shows the motion work.
Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: the degree as your diploma prints it, the school, the city and the graduation month. In your first 3 years out of school, add 1 line on your senior or thesis film with its length and the software you made it in. A GPA earns a place only at 3.5 or above and only while you are a recent graduate.
Education
Senior film: a 2-minute 3D short animated in Maya.
Entry-level and career-change animator resumes
With no studio job yet, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, Education near the top, then every piece of animation that can carry a number. Each of these counts as experience when you give it the same detail a paid job would get:
- Student and thesis films: the runtime, the shots you animated and any showcase or festival that screened them.
- Internships: the kind of studio, the weeks, the shots or assets you delivered and the software.
- Game jams: the hours, the animations you built and whether the team finished a playable game.
- Freelance and channel work: animated logos, explainer videos or shorts, with client counts or views.
- Animation for a nonprofit or school event: listed under Volunteer Experience, with what you made and who used it.
Don't
Creative animation graduate looking for an opportunity to grow my skills at a fun studio.
Do
Animation graduate seeking a junior animator role in games, with a 75-second reel of 9 shots, a 12-week internship on a mobile game and the Unity Certified Associate: Artist credential.
Even an objective needs proof: a reel length, an internship and a credential.
Coming from graphic design, illustration, video editing or event production, keep newest-first order and lead your current job with its motion work: animated logos, event openers, title cards, social clips. A career-change resume works when the first bullets under your present role already read like an animator's, with a software certificate or course backing up the new tools. Keep the story of the switch for your cover letter, and write a cover letter opening on your reel link and the shot that best shows the new direction.
Animator resume FAQ
Where should I put my demo reel link when I apply for animation jobs?
In the application form's portfolio or website field, and in the first paragraph of your cover letter. Check that the link opens without a login, or give the password beside it. Then make sure the productions in your resume bullets are the ones a lead will see on the reel.
How long should an animator resume be?
1 page for most animators. Move to 2 pages only with about 10+ years of credits across several studios or media, and keep your 2 latest roles on page 1. Older contracts can shrink to 1 line each while the reel shows the work.
What software should an animator put on a resume?
The programs in the job ad that you have used on real projects, written by their exact names. For 3D that may be Maya, Houdini or Cinema 4D; for games, Unreal Engine or Unity; for 2D, Toon Boom Harmony or Adobe Animate; for motion graphics, After Effects. Back each one with a bullet about what you made in it.
Do you need a degree to become an animator?
Not always. The BLS says the typical entry route for special effects artists and animators is a bachelor's degree in computer graphics, animation, fine arts or a related field, and that employers usually prefer candidates with a good portfolio and strong technical skills. Without a degree, lead with your reel, your credits and any software certificates.
Are animation certifications worth putting on a resume?
Yes, early in your career or when you are switching fields. An Autodesk, Adobe, Unity or Toon Boom certificate shows hours in a program you have not used on a paid job yet. With several years of studio credits, keep them under Certificates and let your bullets and reel make the case.
How do I list freelance animation work on my resume?
As 1 Work Experience entry titled Freelance Animator, or with your business name, dated from your first paid project. Under it, write bullets for your biggest clients or project types, each with a count. Self-employed workers make up 63% of special effects artists and animators, per the BLS, so studios are used to reading freelance histories.
How much do animators make?
The BLS puts median yearly pay for special effects artists and animators at $102,030 in May 2025. Pay varies with your medium, your city, and staff versus freelance work. Keep salary off your resume and discuss it when an offer is on the table.
