Account managers are judged on what happens after the contract is signed: whether clients stay, renew and buy more. A sales director hiring for the role wants to know how many accounts you carried, what they were worth and how much of that revenue you kept and grew. Client names and a list of duties don't answer any of that. Retention rates, renewal values and growth per account do, and most account managers can pull them from their CRM.
How to Write an Account Manager Resume - Key Takeaways
- List jobs newest first on 1 page, and move to 2 only after 10+ years or several large books of business.
- Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that gives your years, your segment, the size of your book and your best renewal or growth result.
- Start your current job with the book you own (accounts and annual revenue), then show renewals, retention and expansion revenue against it.
- Name your CRM exactly, such as Salesforce or HubSpot, in Skills and inside a bullet that proves what you did with it.
- List Salesforce, HubSpot Academy or SAMA credentials under Certificates, naming who issued each one and when, and mark any program still in progress.
- Describe clients by industry and size unless your employer allows names. Save the file as a PDF and see how hiring software reads it with an ATS resume checker before you apply.
What hiring managers look for in an account manager resume
Account management is the half of selling that starts once a customer has bought. O*NET lists consulting with clients after sales or contract signings to resolve problems and provide ongoing support as a task of wholesale sales work, and the BLS adds following up to make sure customers are satisfied and negotiating prices and terms of sales and service agreements. A sales director reads your resume for that work, measured.
Build each job entry around your book and what happened to it, and give the page these headings:
- Your name plus a headline with your title and segment (for example, Key Account Manager, Foodservice) and contact details
- Summary: 2 or 3 lines under your name that need no heading of their own
- Work Experience, your present role first
- Skills, with your CRM and other software among them
- Certificates
- Education
- Optional: Key Achievements (President's Club, a top-retention ranking), Languages or Volunteer Experience
Best format for an account manager resume
Pick the reverse-chronological resume format and list your current role first, giving each job its title, the company and its location, plus the months you started and left. Account careers grow by the size of the book, from coordinator or associate to account manager, senior, key or strategic accounts, and newest-first order lets a reader follow that growth in a single scan. A combination layout, skills block first, is rarely needed here, even if you come from another line of work.
- Best for most account managersReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
One page holds most account manager resumes, since 3 or 4 strong bullets per job say more than a list of every client. Go to 2 pages after 10+ years or when you have run several distinct books, such as a move from SMB to enterprise accounts, as long as page 1 shows your current book and its results.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page; 2 after 10+ years or several separate books of business |
| Job title line | Title plus segment or product: Account Manager, Mid-Market; Key Account Manager, Grocery |
| Client names | Only clients your employer lets you name; otherwise industry and size, such as a 400-bed hospital group |
| Dates | MM/YYYY on both ends of each role, with Present while the book is still yours |
| Photo and private data | Leave the photo off for nearly every North American employer; skip age, family status and your SSN |
| File type | A PDF titled with your full name, or a .docx if the application portal requests one |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. For an account manager, the space a photo would take is better used by a headline that names your segment and a summary that carries your book size.
Account manager resume summary vs. objective
One question settles it: if you have ever owned a set of accounts, write a resume summary with your years, your segment, the size of your book and one retention or growth result. If you have supported accounts but never owned them, write an objective stating the role you are after and the client work you already handle. Our account manager summary and objective examples show both at different levels.
Account manager resume summary formula
Title with X years in industry, managing number segment accounts worth annual revenue. Your best renewal, retention or expansion figure. CRM and credential.
Example
Account manager with 9 years in B2B sales, managing 46 manufacturing accounts worth $11.2M a year. Renewed 19 of 20 contracts due in 2025 and added $1.4M through cross-sells. Salesforce user completing SAMA's CSAM program.
Don't
Client-focused account manager with excellent communication skills and a passion for building lasting relationships.
Do
Account manager with 5 years in SaaS, owning 60 SMB accounts and $2.1M in ARR. Kept logo retention above 92% in each of the last 3 years. Works daily in HubSpot.
The rewrite swaps adjectives for a segment, a book size and a retention record.
Account manager work experience bullets with retention and growth numbers
Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets and each older one up to 4, every bullet starting with an action verb. Account work already lives in a CRM and a renewal calendar, so most of your numbers are a report away: accounts, contract values, renewal dates, upsells and escalations. Write them as achievements on your resume with a before and after, not as the duties from your job posting.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Book of business | Accounts, annual revenue, segment | Took over a book of 32 mid-market accounts worth $6.8M a year. |
| Renewals | Contracts renewed, renewal rate, accounts lost and why | Renewed 41 of 43 annual contracts in FY2025, losing 1 account to a buyout. |
| Expansion | Upsell and cross-sell revenue, net revenue retention | Raised net revenue retention from 101% to 112% by adding a second product line to 9 accounts. |
| Client health | QBRs held, NPS or CSAT, contacts per account | Held 24 quarterly business reviews a year and lifted the book's NPS from 31 to 48. |
| Escalations | Issues handled, time to resolve, credits issued | Cut average escalation time from 6 days to 2 with a shared case log for sales and operations. |
| Pricing and contracts | Price increases, terms, margin held | Passed a 4% price increase through to 38 accounts with no lost customers. |
This is how the numbers look in one account manager's entry. The book comes first, renewals and growth follow, and the earlier inside sales job keeps 2 bullets that point toward account work.
Work Experience
- Manage 46 manufacturing accounts worth $11.2M in annual revenue, including 2 accounts over $1M each.
- Renewed 19 of the 20 supply contracts due in 2025, holding gross revenue retention at 96%.
- Added $1.4M a year by cross-selling safety and MRO products into 12 accounts that had bought only fasteners.
- Run quarterly business reviews for the top 10 accounts; late-delivery complaints fell from 31 to 9 a year.
- Answered 60 to 80 freight quote requests a week and turned 27% into booked shipments.
- Took over 15 small shipper accounts in 2019 and grew their annual billing from $380K to $610K.
Don't
Responsible for managing a portfolio of key accounts.
Do
Managed 18 healthcare distributor accounts worth $4.3M a year and renewed all 18 in 2025.
A portfolio means nothing to a reader until it has a count, a value and an outcome.
Don't
Built strong relationships with clients across the territory.
Do
Set up monthly calls with purchasing and operations leads at 14 accounts, which surfaced 6 expansion projects worth $520K.
Account management skills and CRM software for your resume
Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting requests and your own bullets can back up. Renewals, upselling and contract negotiation fit nearly any account manager resume; forecasting, pricing or onboarding only where they were part of your job.
Hard skills for account managers
- Contract renewals
- Upselling and cross-selling
- Contract and price negotiation
- Account planning
- Quarterly business reviews
- Revenue forecasting
- CRM pipeline management
- Client onboarding
- Pricing and margin analysis
- Churn risk analysis
Soft skills sales directors value
- Active listening
- Calm handling of escalations
- Follow-through on promises
- Clear written updates
- Building trust with buyers
- Coordinating internal teams
Put your systems among your skills, then show each one at work inside a bullet. O*NET gives Salesforce, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook its In Demand flag for both sales managers and wholesale sales representatives, and lists HubSpot as a hot technology. Where an ad mentions Gainsight, Zendesk, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or an ERP such as SAP and you have used it, write the name exactly as the ad does.
Account manager certifications: Salesforce, HubSpot and CSAM
No license is needed to manage accounts, and the BLS confirms that wholesale sales representatives are not required to hold professional certification, though some choose to earn it. Where you have one, list certifications on your resume under Certificates, each with its issuing body and the year you earned it. A CRM credential helps most when the posting names that system, and a strategic account credential when you manage a few large clients.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator | Salesforce | A Salesforce exam on configuring and maintaining the platform. Worth it if you build reports, dashboards or account records yourself. Write the name exactly as your certificate shows it. |
| Inbound Sales Certification | HubSpot Academy | A free online course of about 3 hours in 7 lessons, followed by the certification exam. |
| CSAM (Certified Strategic Account Manager) | SAMA (Strategic Account Management Association) | A key, national, global or strategic account role with at least 1 strategic account, a sponsoring manager, 9 training units and a final Executive Account Review. SAMA puts average completion at 12 to 18 months. |
How to list a certification still in progress
A program that takes over a year, such as the CSAM, is worth showing before you finish, because enrollment needs a sponsoring manager and shows your employer is investing in you. List it under Certificates with the units completed and the expected year, and keep the letters off your headline until SAMA awards them.
Certificates
- Certified Strategic Account Manager (CSAM), SAMA: 6 of 9 units completed, Executive Account Review expected 2027
- Inbound Sales Certification, HubSpot Academy, 2025
Do account managers need a degree? How to list your education
It depends on what you sell more than on the title. The BLS treats a high school education as generally enough to sell products that are not scientific or technical, while reps selling scientific or technical products typically need at least a bachelor's degree. Sales managers, a related BLS occupation, are typically expected to hold a 4-year degree and bring prior sales experience.
Apply the usual approach to listing education on a resume: degree, school, the school's location and the month and year you finished. Business, marketing and communications are the usual majors, but a degree in the field your clients work in, such as nursing for medical device accounts, is worth a line in your summary. Add a GPA only in your first 2 years out of school and only at 3.5 or above.
Education
Junior and career-change account manager resumes
Few people start as account managers. Many arrive from an account coordinator role, inside sales or customer service, and many companies, the BLS reports, put new sales reps through formal training programs. A junior resume should show the client work you already own, with the same numbers a full book would get:
- Accounts you supported: how many, for which account manager, and what you handled on them, such as orders, renewals paperwork or onboarding.
- Customer service queues: tickets or calls a week, resolution time and any account you kept from leaving.
- Inside sales: quotes sent, conversion rate and the small accounts you were handed after the sale.
- Retail or hospitality management: regular or corporate customers you looked after, and repeat orders you grew.
Don't
Motivated professional seeking an account manager position where I can grow my skills.
Do
Customer service lead with 4 years on a 300-account wholesale queue, seeking an associate account manager role. Resolved about 45 order issues a week and kept 2 at-risk accounts in 2025.
Even without a book of your own, show the accounts, the volume and a save.
Coming from retail, teaching or customer service, keep your jobs in date order, newest on top, and lead with a summary naming the account work you already do, such as repeat customers, renewals or complaints you resolved. A career-change resume reads strongest when your present job opens on its most client-facing duties. Save the reason you switched for the letter that goes with it: these sales cover letter examples show how to open with a result and keep the reason to 2 sentences.
Account Manager resume FAQ
What is the difference between an account manager and an account executive resume?
Mostly what you prove. An account executive resume leads with new business: pipeline, deals closed and quota attainment. An account manager resume leads with existing clients: the size of the book, renewal rates, retention and expansion revenue. If your job mixed both, split the bullets so each kind of result is easy to find.
How do I show client retention on an account manager resume?
Use the measure your company reported and give its base. Write renewals as a count, such as 19 of 20 contracts, or as gross revenue retention for the year, and add net revenue retention if you grew the accounts. Name any loss you could not control, such as an acquisition, in a few words.
Can I name my clients on my resume?
Only if the client relationship is public or your employer allows it, and never with figures your contract treats as confidential. Otherwise describe each client by industry and size, such as a regional grocery chain with 90 stores. The reader learns the same thing without you breaking an agreement.
How long should an account manager resume be?
One page for most account managers. Use 2 pages after 10+ years or if you have managed several separate books, for example SMB and then enterprise accounts, with today's book and its renewal record on page 1.
Do you need a degree to become an account manager?
Not always. The BLS lists a bachelor's as the usual degree for sales managers, but finishing high school is generally enough to start selling products that are not scientific or technical. Strong retention numbers from a coordinator or inside sales job can carry a resume without a degree.
Which CRM should I list on an account manager resume?
List the CRM you have actually run a book in, by its exact name, plus any other system from the listing that you have worked in. O*NET gives Salesforce its In Demand flag for sales managers, and any CRM you list should reappear in a bullet about what you tracked or built in it.
How do I show account management experience if my title was different?
Keep your real job title, then move the account work to the top of that entry. O*NET lists account representative as a reported title for wholesale sales reps, and titles such as client success manager or sales representative often cover the same work. Your summary can say account manager if that is the role you want.
