26 Account Executive Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Account Executive resume example

Account executives are measured by what they close, and a resume for the job is judged the same way. It should show what you sold, to whom, how big the deals were and where you finished against quota. The title covers very different work, from software sales to agency media sales and staffing services, and a result that impresses one reader can mean little to the next. Naming your segment and giving every quota figure its target lets any reader judge it.

How to Write an Account Executive Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Put your segment or side in the headline, such as Account Executive, Mid-Market SaaS or Advertising Account Executive.
  • List roles newest first on 1 page, keeping every year you carried a quota visible.
  • Write each quota result as a percent with its dollar target and fiscal year, then back it with deal size, win rate or cycle length.
  • Count only the revenue you closed or sourced yourself, and say how a shared deal was split.
  • List a state insurance license or a FINRA registration first under Certificates if your product requires one; otherwise a CRM or sales credential is optional.
  • Run the finished file through an ATS resume checker before you upload it to an employer's portal.

What sales leaders look for in an account executive resume

A sales director or agency lead reads your resume to judge whether you can carry their number. Companies generally set monthly quotas for advertising sales agents, the BLS says, and usually set goals or quotas for wholesale and manufacturing sales reps, who negotiate prices and the terms of sales agreements. O*NET adds that the job means keeping an assigned account base while developing new accounts, so your entries should show both.

Each job entry needs 4 answers: the segment you sold into, the size of a typical deal, how you built pipeline, and how you finished against target. Organize the page with these sections:

  • Name, a headline with your segment (Account Executive, Enterprise) and contact details, with your LinkedIn URL
  • A 2- to 3-line summary under the name, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, current role on top
  • Skills, with your CRM and sales tools listed inside it
  • Certificates, with any license first
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements (President's Club, team rankings) or Languages

Best format for an account executive resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format and start with your current role: title, company, city, and start and end months written MM/YYYY. AE careers are read as a series of bigger books and bigger deals, from SDR to SMB, mid-market and enterprise seats, and newest-first order puts your largest quota where the reader starts. A combination format, with skills placed above the work history, fits only if you have never sold in any job before.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an account executive resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page for up to about 10 years in sales. A senior account executive with several employers and segments can use 2 pages, as long as page 1 carries the current role and the best quota years.

Account Executive resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page up to about 10 years; 2 only if page 1 already holds your best quota years
HeadlineTitle plus segment or side: Account Executive, Mid-Market SaaS; Advertising Account Executive, Broadcast
Quota resultsA percent, the dollar target and the fiscal year, for each year you carried a number
DatesMM/YYYY for the start and end of every role, Present on the current one
Photo, age and ID numbersLeave the photo off for most US and Canadian employers, and keep your age, family status and Social Security number off the page
File typePDF, unless the applicant portal asks for .docx

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Spend the top of the page on the headline and a summary with your strongest year, because that is what a sales leader reads before choosing to keep going.

Account executive resume summary vs. objective

Apply one test: if you have carried a quota or owned client billings, write a resume summary with your years, what you sell, who buys it and one result against target. If no deal has closed under your name yet, write an objective instead, covered in the entry-level section below. Draft it after your bullets and lift its strongest figure from them.

Account executive resume summary formula

Segment account executive with X years selling product to buyer. Quota or new revenue result, with the period. Deal size, win rate or cycle. CRM you work in.

Example

Mid-market account executive with 10 years in software and digital advertising sales, selling scheduling software to operations leaders. Closed $1.37M in new ARR in FY2025, 118% of quota, with an average first-year contract of $44K. Works every deal in Salesforce.

Don't

Driven, competitive account executive with a passion for closing deals and building client relationships.

Do

SMB account executive with 4 years selling payroll software to restaurants and retail shops. Closed 212 new customers in 2025 at 103% of quota, with an average contract of $7,400.

Segment, product, buyer, volume and a quota result, all in 2 sentences.

Account executive work experience bullets with quota, deal and pipeline numbers

Your current role takes 3 to 4 verb-first bullets; older roles take 2 to 4. Your CRM already holds the numbers a sales leader will ask about in the interview: bookings, quota, pipeline created, win rate, deal size and days to close. Write them as achievements on your resume, each with the period it covers.

Numbers that prove account executive work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Quota and bookingsPercent of target, dollar bookings or new ARR, fiscal yearBooked $905K in new business in FY2025 on a $780K target (116%).
PipelineQualified pipeline created, coverage ratio, share you sourcedBuilt $3.2M in qualified pipeline in 2 quarters, holding 3.5x coverage on the quarterly target.
Win rateOpportunities won out of qualified, competitive winsWon 31 of 88 qualified opportunities in 2025, a 35% win rate against 2 named rivals.
Deal size and cycleAverage contract value, days from first meeting to signatureCut the median cycle on deals over $40K from 112 to 84 days.
Agency and media accountsAdvertiser renewals, annual spend, package upgradesRenewed 17 of 19 advertisers for 2026 and moved 6 from print-only to print plus digital packages.
Staffing servicesNew client companies, workers placed, gross marginOpened 14 new client companies that put 160 temporary workers on assignment at a 27% gross margin.

Here is one mid-market AE's entry built that way. The quota result leads, deal size and cycle follow, and the earlier agency-side role keeps 2 bullets about the book it grew.

Account executive skills and sales software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the job ad requests and your bullets already prove. Prospecting, discovery and negotiation fit almost every AE resume; media planning, rate cards or staffing contracts belong only where you sold them.

Hard skills for account executives

  • Outbound prospecting
  • Discovery calls
  • Product demos
  • Pipeline management
  • Sales forecasting
  • Proposal and RFP writing
  • Contract negotiation
  • Account planning
  • Media planning and rate cards
  • Upselling and renewals

Soft skills sales leaders value

  • Active listening
  • Persuasive presenting
  • Resilience after a lost deal
  • Follow-through
  • Coachability
  • Time management across a pipeline

Put your CRM and sales tools inside Skills, then show each one at work in a bullet. O*NET's profile for advertising sales agents flags Salesforce, Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook as in-demand technology, along with Canva and Adobe InDesign for the proposals and media kits agency AEs build. Where a posting lists HubSpot, Gong, Outreach or LinkedIn Sales Navigator and you have used it, copy that exact name.

Account executive certifications and licenses: HubSpot, Salesforce, insurance and Series 7

Most AE roles need no credential: the BLS says wholesale and manufacturing sales reps are not required to hold professional certification, though some choose to earn it. 2 cases are different. The BLS says insurance agents must have a license in the states where they work, and anyone selling securities must be licensed through FINRA. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, each with its issuer and month.

Account executive credentials and when each one helps
CredentialIssued byWhen it helps
Inbound Sales CertificationHubSpot AcademyA free course of 3 hr 6 min in 7 lessons and 5 quizzes. Most useful where the team sells on HubSpot.
Salesforce Certified Platform AdministratorSalesforceWorth listing if you build your own reports, dashboards or account records. Use the exact name printed on your Trailhead certificate.
State insurance licenseYour state's insurance departmentRequired to sell insurance. The BLS says most states issue it only after specified courses and a state exam.
Series 7 (General Securities Representative)FINRARequired to sell securities products. FINRA requires sponsorship by a member firm and the SIE exam as a corequisite.

Where an insurance or securities license goes

Put the license first under Certificates, with the exact name and the date you passed or were licensed, and add it to your headline whenever the job requires it (Account Executive, Series 7). A license you are still studying for goes on the same list with the word scheduled and the month of the exam.

Sample Certificates section: financial services account executive

Certificates

  • Series 7: General Securities Representative, FINRA, 04/2023
  • Securities Industry Essentials (SIE), FINRA, 01/2023
  • Inbound Sales Certification, HubSpot Academy, 09/2024

Do account executives need a degree? How to list your education

That turns on what you sell. The BLS says entry-level advertising sales jobs typically require finishing high school, though some employers prefer a bachelor's degree, while reps selling technical or scientific products typically need at least a bachelor's. Marketing, business and communications are the usual majors on an AE resume.

Follow the standard way of listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation month. A GPA of 3.5 or higher earns a place only in your first 2 years out of school. After your first full quota year, Education moves below Work Experience and stays at 1 or 2 lines.

Entry-level, SDR and career-change account executive resumes

Moving up from an SDR or BDR seat, or straight out of school, use an entry-level resume layout with a short objective and your strongest selling proof near the top. Many companies run formal training programs for new wholesale and manufacturing reps, the BLS reports, and advertising sales agents usually learn on the job, so a first AE resume only has to show that you can create and move a deal. Give each item below a number:

  • SDR or BDR work: meetings booked, the share that became opportunities and the pipeline you sourced for AEs.
  • Sales internships: accounts researched, outreach sent and the deals you helped move forward.
  • Retail or hospitality selling: sales per shift, add-on rate and your rank among the staff.
  • Campus fundraising or sponsorship sales: dollars raised or sponsors signed, listed as a job or as a key achievement.

Use one of these resume objective examples as a start, then rewrite it around your own figure, as in the pair below.

Don't

Seeking an account executive role at a fast-growing company where I can use my sales skills.

Do

Sales development representative with 14 months of outbound prospecting, seeking a first SMB account executive role. Booked 186 qualified meetings in 2025, 41 of which became closed deals.

An objective still needs proof: a meeting count, a conversion or a ranking.

Coming from retail, hospitality, recruiting or teaching, keep the reverse-chronological layout and lead with the selling you already do. Your transferable skills carry weight only with numbers attached, such as sales per shift, upgrades sold or new clients signed. If your first AE year is already behind you, put it on top with its quota result, then list any sales or marketing certificate course under Education. A career-change resume leaves the reason for the move to the letter, and these sales cover letter examples show how to open it with a result.

Account Executive resume FAQ

What is the difference between an account executive and an account manager resume?

An account executive resume leads with new business: bookings, quota attainment, win rate and deals closed. An account manager resume leads with what happened to existing clients, such as renewals and growth. If your AE role covered both, put new revenue first and renewals second.

What should go in the headline of an account executive resume?

Your title plus your segment or side, such as Account Executive, Enterprise or Advertising Account Executive, Broadcast. Add any license the job requires, such as Series 7, at the end of the same line.

How do I show quota results below 100% on an account executive resume?

Show your best year in full and give the weaker years a different number, such as your team rank, win rate or pipeline created. If your team missed plan as a group, say where you finished on it, such as 92% of quota and 2nd of 7 reps.

How do I list a deal I closed with a sales engineer or a manager?

Write the deal and your part of it in one bullet: the value, the stage you owned and the split your comp plan credited you with. Keep team totals out of your own quota figures.

Is an agency account executive resume different from a sales account executive resume?

Yes. An agency or media AE resume counts advertisers or clients, their annual spend, renewals and campaigns sold, and often lists design tools such as Canva or Adobe InDesign. A software or B2B AE resume counts new ARR, quota, deal size and sales cycle.

How long should an account executive resume be?

1 page for most AEs with up to about 10 years in sales. Use 2 pages only after several employers or segments, and keep your current role and best quota years on page 1.

Do account executives need a license or certification?

Only in some industries. Insurance AEs need a license in each state where they sell, and selling securities requires FINRA licensing such as the Series 7. Elsewhere a credential is optional, and a HubSpot or Salesforce certificate helps most when the posting names that system.

How much do account executives make?

For advertising sales agents, the BLS occupation closest to many AE roles, median annual pay was $64,820 in May 2025. Your own pay depends on segment, commission plan and product, so leave salary and on-target earnings off your resume.
