Supervisor resume example

A supervisor gets work done through other people, on a production shift, a job site crew or a service floor. An employer hiring one wants your headcount, the targets your team was held to, and the people decisions that were yours. You already track most of that in shift reports and safety logs. What often goes missing on paper is the team size behind each result, and with it in place, a reader from any industry can see what you ran.

How to Write a Supervisor Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List jobs newest first on 1 page, moving to 2 only with 10+ years of supervising across several sites or teams.
  • State your team size and shift in the first bullet of every supervisor job, such as 14 technicians on day shift.
  • Put a number your team is measured on in each bullet: output, on-time rate, overtime hours, turnover, injuries or customer scores.
  • Say which people decisions were yours: hiring, schedules, training, reviews or discipline.
  • List OSHA 10 or 30 as completed training cards and real certifications such as STS or CSSGB with their issuers under Certificates.
  • Put the posting's own title word, such as supervisor, lead or foreman, in your headline, and test the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What employers look for in a supervisor resume

O*NET lists planning work schedules and assignments, enforcing safety rules and training employees among the core tasks of production supervisors, and adds recruiting, interviewing and evaluating staff for office supervisors. Construction supervisors assign work by crew and inspect sites for safety, so the same pattern holds on a job site.

Build the page from these sections, named the way applicant tracking software expects them:

  • Name, headline (for example, Production Supervisor, STS) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line summary under your name, without a heading
  • Work Experience, with the team size in the first bullet of each job
  • Skills, with the scheduling, ERP or field software you use
  • Certificates, for safety, quality and food safety credentials
  • Education
  • Optional: Languages (Spanish for a bilingual crew, for instance), Key Achievements, or a Volunteer Experience section

Best format for a supervisor resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your current job first, then each earlier one with its title, employer, location and MM/YYYY start and end. A move up from the floor, from operator, associate or technician to lead and supervisor, reads clearly in this order. Keep it even if you are new to the field, and let your summary carry the change.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a supervisor resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page covers most supervisor careers. Go to 2 only when you have 10+ years of supervising across several sites, shifts or departments, and keep your last 2 roles on page 1. Jobs older than about 15 years can shrink to 1 line each or drop off.

Supervisor resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 once you have 10+ years supervising several teams
Scope lineTeam size, shift and output in the first bullet: 22 associates on nights
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY), with Present on the job you hold today
Section headingsStandard names such as Work Experience, Skills and Certificates
Age and ID numbersLeave out age, marital status and your Social Security number
File typePDF, or Word when the company's application portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. When you apply through a company portal, a plain layout with standard headings gets read correctly the first time.

Supervisor resume summary vs. objective

The test is simple: if you have held a supervisor, lead or foreman role, write a summary; if you are applying for your first one, write an objective. A resume summary for a supervisor names your setting, your team size and one result, in 2 to 3 lines. Write the summary once your bullets are done, and reuse their best figure.

Supervisor resume summary formula

Title with X years in industry or setting, leading team size and shift. Best team result as a before and after, with how long it took. Credential or training that fits the posting.

Example

Production shift supervisor with 8 years in manufacturing, leading a 24-person second shift on 3 lines. Raised OEE from 61% to 72% in 18 months while cutting overtime by more than a third. Holds the BCSP Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification.

Don't

Motivated supervisor with excellent leadership and communication skills, looking to bring value to a growing team.

Do

Warehouse supervisor with 5 years in third-party logistics, running an 18-person inbound and picking team. Held pick accuracy at 99.6% through 2 peak seasons with the same headcount.

The rewrite gives a setting, a team size, a measured result and the conditions it held under.

How to write supervisor work experience bullets with numbers

Put your scope first: team size, shift and what the team produces, in the first bullet under each title. Then write 3 to 4 bullets for your current role and 1 to 3 for older ones, each opening on an action verb and closing on what changed. Show achievements on your resume with a before and after, since most supervisor targets are already counted in a daily or weekly report.

Numbers that prove supervisor work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Team and shiftsPeople supervised, shifts, sites or crewsDirected a 14-person maintenance crew across 2 shifts in a 300,000 sq ft plant.
Scheduling and laborLabor hours, overtime, coverage gapsBuilt weekly schedules for 35 associates within a 1,300-hour labor budget, with no open shifts in Q3.
Hiring and retentionHires, turnover, training completedHired and onboarded 12 seasonal associates and kept 11 through the end of the season.
Output and qualityUnits, scrap, error or defect ratesLowered scrap on the extrusion line from 4.1% to 2.6% by adding a first-piece check at every changeover.
SafetyRecordable injuries, near-miss reports, auditsRaised near-miss reporting from 5 to 22 a quarter by reviewing every report at the next pre-shift meeting.
ServiceResolution rates, response times, complaintsLifted first-call resolution from 68% to 79% by coaching each rep on 2 recorded calls a week.

Here is a production supervisor's entry built that way. The scope sits in the first bullet, and the older role shows the step up from line lead.

Sample entry: production shift supervisor at a food plant

Don't

Responsible for supervising a team of customer service employees.

Do

Supervised 16 customer service reps on a billing queue and cut average handle time from 7:40 to 6:15 with weekly call reviews.

The good version says how many people, on what work, and what changed.

Don't

Ensured all employees followed safety rules.

Do

Ran 30 pre-shift safety huddles a month and cut recordable injuries on the shipping dock from 6 in 2024 to 2 in 2025.

Supervisor skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that your bullets back up, starting with the ones in the job ad. Your leadership skills are best shown in the bullets themselves, through the people you trained, the conflicts you settled and the results your team reached.

Hard skills for supervisors

  • Shift scheduling and labor planning
  • Onboarding and on-the-job training
  • Performance reviews and coaching
  • Attendance and timekeeping approval
  • Safety inspections and toolbox talks
  • KPI and production tracking
  • Root cause analysis
  • Lean and 5S
  • Inventory and cycle counts
  • Incident investigation

Soft skills employers value in supervisors

  • Clear daily direction
  • Fair and consistent discipline
  • Conflict resolution
  • Calm decisions under pressure
  • Listening to the floor
  • Accountability

Then name the systems you use every day. O*NET flags Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and SAP software as in-demand technology for production supervisors, and lists Procore and Microsoft Project as hot technology for construction supervisors. Add the timekeeping, warehouse or ticketing system the posting names, written exactly as the employer writes it, and name each one inside at least 1 bullet about the work you did in it.

OSHA 30, STS, Six Sigma and ServSafe: certifications for supervisors

Supervisor roles seldom carry a license of their own, so the training and credentials you hold do a lot of the work. List certifications on your resume under Certificates with the issuer and the year, and pick the ones that match the setting: safety for plants and job sites, quality methods for manufacturing, food safety for kitchens and food plants.

Supervisor certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
OSHA 30-Hour (Construction or General Industry)OSHA Outreach Training Program, card from an OSHA-authorized trainerA 30-hour course; OSHA describes it as more appropriate for supervisors or workers with some safety responsibility. It is a completion card, not a certification.
Safety Trained Supervisor (STS)Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)At least 30 hours of safety, health and environmental training, plus 2 years of supervisory experience or 4 years of work experience (or a listed degree or apprenticeship), and a passed exam.
Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC)BCSPThe same 30 hours of training, plus 2 years of construction supervisory experience or 4 years of construction work (or a listed alternative), and a passed exam.
Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB)ASQ3 years of full-time, paid work in areas of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge and a passed exam; ASQ grants no education waivers.
ServSafe Food Protection Manager CertificationNational Restaurant Association (ServSafe)A proctored exam; the certification is accredited by ANAB under Conference for Food Protection standards.

How to list OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 cards

OSHA says plainly that none of its Outreach courses is a certification, so never write OSHA certified. List the card under Certificates by its full name and industry, such as OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, with the month and year you finished. A credential you are still working toward goes in the same section, marked as scheduled or in progress.

Sample Certificates section: production supervisor

Certificates

  • Safety Trained Supervisor (STS), Board of Certified Safety Professionals, 09/2024
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, OSHA Outreach Training Program, 04/2022
  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), ASQ, exam scheduled 03/2027

Education on a supervisor resume, with or without a degree

Many supervisors are hired for experience, not a degree. O*NET places production supervisors in Job Zone 3, where earlier work experience is required and most jobs ask for vocational training, on-the-job experience or an associate's degree; 33% of the workers it surveyed named high school completion as the requirement. If that is your highest level, list your diploma or GED with the school and year, and put your training under Certificates.

With a degree, list education on your resume as degree, school, city and graduation date, placed below Work Experience. A degree in business, management or a field such as engineering or construction management helps when you apply for a larger team. If you finished it while working, the date says that on its own.

Sample education entry: degree finished while supervising

Completed while working full time.

First-time and career-change supervisor resumes

Going for your first supervisor job, you need proof that people already follow your lead. Use an objective that names the role you want, keep your current title on each job, and pull your leadership work into the first bullets. Someone with no full-time work history yet can start from an entry-level resume layout.

  • Lead or trainer duties: new hires you trained, with how many and how fast they were ready.
  • Acting or relief supervisor shifts: how many you covered and what the shift hit while you ran it.
  • Key holder or opening and closing duties: cash counts, store opens and closes, alarm and safety checks.
  • Safety or quality committee seats: audits, near-miss reviews or fixes you led.

Don't

Hardworking team player seeking a supervisor position where I can grow my career.

Do

Lead cashier with 3 years at a high-volume grocery store, seeking a front-end supervisor role. Trained 10 new cashiers and ran 40 closing shifts as acting supervisor.

An objective still needs evidence: training, acting shifts or a team you already guide.

Changing careers into supervision from consulting, teaching, the military or an office role, lead with your first supervisor job, even a short one, and write the earlier career in team terms: people you led, schedules you ran, targets you owned. A career-change resume works when its first 3 bullets read as supervisor work. Keep the summary to 1 line on the switch and save the full story for your cover letter, where our team leader cover letter examples show how to do it in a few lines.

Supervisor resume FAQ

How do I write a supervisor resume if my title was never Supervisor?

Keep your real title on each job and show the supervising inside it. Open the entry with the people you led or trained, list any acting supervisor shifts with a count, and put the word supervisor in your objective or headline so a keyword search still matches the posting.

How long should a supervisor resume be?

One page for most people. A second page makes sense once you have 10+ years of supervising across different sites, departments or shifts, as long as your 2 latest jobs and your strongest team results sit on page 1.

Can I call OSHA 30 a certification on my resume?

No, but you should still list it. OSHA says its Outreach courses are not certifications, so write OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry under Certificates with the completion date, and call it a card or training, never a certification.

Do supervisors need a college degree?

Usually not. O*NET's data for production supervisors shows most jobs ask for prior work experience plus vocational training, on-the-job experience or an associate's degree. A business or management degree helps for larger teams and for moving up to manager.

How should I show a promotion to supervisor at the same company?

List the employer once, then stack each title under it with its own dates, newest first. Give the supervisor role 3 to 4 bullets with team numbers and the earlier role 1 or 2, so the reader sees the step up at a glance.

What skills should a supervisor resume list?

List 6 to 8 skills from the job ad that your bullets prove, such as scheduling, training, performance reviews, safety inspections and KPI tracking, plus the systems you use daily. Leave out general traits like motivated or hardworking and show them through results.

Should I list acting or relief supervisor experience?

Yes. Add it as a bullet under the job where you did it, with the number of shifts or weeks you covered and what your team achieved, such as on-time shipments or no missed orders. It is often the strongest proof on a first supervisor resume.

How much do supervisors make?

Pay follows the field your team works in. The BLS reports May 2025 median annual wages of $74,450 for first-line supervisors of production and operating workers, $69,500 for first-line supervisors of office and administrative support workers and $48,520 for first-line supervisors of retail sales workers. Keep pay off your resume and discuss it later.
