General Manager resume example

A general manager answers for a business unit end to end: sales, staffing, costs and the customers who keep coming back. Owners and regional executives filling the seat ask how big the operation was, how many managers ran it under you, and what profit did after you arrived. A GM touches so many parts of a business that the resume can turn into a tour of every department. Pick the 3 or 4 decisions that changed revenue, margin or turnover, and give each one its before and after figure.

How to Write a General Manager Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List your jobs newest first on 1 to 2 pages, with your current GM role taking most of page 1.
  • Open every GM job with a scope line: revenue, headcount, department heads and the number of locations or plants.
  • Write bullets around P&L results such as revenue growth, margin, controllable cost, labor percentage and turnover, each with a before and after.
  • Say exactly which P&L lines you owned, so a reader never has to guess whether "full P&L" included rent, pricing or capital spending.
  • List Six Sigma, the PMP or the CFE under Certificates when the job ad values them; none is required for the title.
  • Leave out age and family details, and test the PDF with an ATS resume checker before it goes to an owner or recruiter.

What owners and executives look for in a general manager resume

In O*NET's description, general and operations managers often run several departments or sites and lead through supervisors who report to them. Its core tasks include reviewing financial statements and performance data, directing budget activities, and selecting, training and evaluating staff.

The BLS counted about 3.6 million general and operations manager jobs in 2025, across every kind of business from car dealerships to food plants. That spread is why the industry, the size of the unit and your reporting line belong at the top of each job. Use these sections:

  • Name, a headline with your title and industry (General Manager, Commercial Services), and contact details
  • A summary of 2 to 3 lines below the headline, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, current GM role first, each job opening with its scope
  • Skills, with the reporting, CRM and scheduling systems you run the business on
  • Certificates, if you hold Six Sigma, the PMP, the CFE or an industry credential
  • Education, with any MBA listed first
  • Optional: Key Achievements for 2 or 3 company-level wins, or Volunteer Experience such as a nonprofit board seat

Best format for a general manager resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, with your newest role first and each entry giving the title, employer and location, dated MM/YYYY. Many GMs reach the role through a ladder of supervisor, department manager, assistant GM and GM, often inside one company, and this format shows each step and how long you held it. A combination layout only helps if you are moving into general management from a functional lead role, and even then your work history should follow the skills block in date order.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a general manager resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep to 1 page if you have run a business for under 5 years. Two pages suit a GM with 10+ years, several units or a turnaround story, as long as page 1 holds your current role and its strongest numbers. Earlier jobs from more than 15 years back can shrink to a title, employer and dates.

General Manager resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, or 2 once you have 10+ years or more than 1 business unit
Scope lineRevenue, headcount, department heads and sites, in 1 line under the job title
DatesMM/YYYY, and list each promotion at the same company as its own title with dates
HeadlineYour title plus the industry, such as General Manager, Food Manufacturing
Photo and private dataA photo is uncommon in the US and Canada; omit your age, family status and Social Security number
File typePDF for email and recruiters; a Word file only if a portal requests one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A GM resume often passes a recruiter, an HR screen and an owner, so use a plain layout every system reads.

General manager resume summary vs. objective

Use a resume summary if you have held a role with profit responsibility, even at assistant GM level: your title, years, industry, the size of what you run and your best result. Use an objective only if you have not yet run a P&L, for example when you step up from a functional lead role. The resume objective examples show how to name the target role and back it with proof. Either way, keep it to 3 lines and take its number from your bullets.

General manager resume summary formula

Title with X years in industry, running revenue with headcount and department heads or sites. Your strongest profit, cost or growth result, with a before and after. Credential or degree.

Example

General manager with 15 years in commercial services, running a $34M linen and laundry business with 210 employees and 5 department heads. Raised EBITDA margin from 11.2% to 14.6% in 3 years. ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

Don't

Results-driven general manager with a proven track record of leading teams and driving growth in fast-paced environments.

Do

General manager with 9 years in wholesale distribution, running a $12M HVAC parts business with 64 people. Grew operating profit from $0.9M to $1.6M in 3 years by repricing 2 contractor tiers.

The second version gives the industry, the size and a profit result anyone can check.

How to write general manager bullets with P&L numbers

Under your current GM role, write 3 to 4 bullets after the scope line; older jobs get 1 to 3. Each bullet starts with a verb, names the decision you made and ends with what it did to revenue, margin, cost, customers or people. Lead with achievements on your resume over duties: "oversaw daily operations" describes every GM, while a margin that rose 3 points describes you.

Numbers that prove general manager work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
RevenueAnnual sales, growth rate, new accounts or contractsGrew revenue from $18M to $23.5M in 2 years by adding a commercial sales team of 3.
Profit and marginGross margin, operating profit, EBITDALifted gross margin from 27% to 31% by renegotiating 4 supplier contracts and dropping 2 low-margin lines.
Cost and laborLabor as a share of sales, controllable cost, overtimeHeld labor at 24% of sales, down from 28%, by rebuilding schedules around hourly demand.
PeopleManagers led, turnover, promotions from withinBuilt a team of 6 department heads and promoted 4 shift leads into manager roles in 3 years.
CustomersRetention, repeat business, survey scores, complaintsRaised the repeat-customer rate from 58% to 66% after a 2-day service guarantee.
Safety and growth projectsRecordable incidents, audits, openings, capital projectsOpened a $2.2M expansion 3 weeks ahead of schedule while cutting the OSHA recordable rate from 4.1 to 1.9.

The scope line comes first, every bullet carries a number with its base, and the earlier operations role gets fewer lines.

Don't

Managed a team of department heads.

Do

Led 7 department heads, replaced 2 in the first 6 months and filled 3 later openings by promoting from within.

How to show multi-unit, division or franchise scope

When you run several locations, give the total in the scope line (sites, combined revenue, people) and use bullets for the results that span them, such as the best and worst unit closing the gap. A division manager names the division and the share of company revenue it carries. A franchise GM lists the operating company as the employer and the brand in the scope line, then adds results the franchisor measures, such as brand standards audit scores or sales against the system average.

General manager skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 skills that the posting names and your GM bullets back up. Owners care most about financial skills such as budgeting and P&L management, and about leadership skills shown through the managers you built.

Hard skills for general managers

  • P&L management
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Pricing and margin analysis
  • Labor scheduling and cost control
  • Hiring and manager development
  • Sales and business development
  • Vendor and contract negotiation
  • KPI reporting
  • Safety and compliance programs
  • Process improvement

Soft skills owners look for in a GM

  • Decision-making with incomplete data
  • Accountability
  • Coaching managers
  • Clear communication upward
  • Conflict resolution
  • Customer focus

List the systems you run the business on with your skills, and name each one again in a bullet that shows what you did with it. O*NET flags Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Office as in-demand technology for general and operations managers, with Kronos Workforce Timekeeper, Salesforce, QuickBooks and Tableau among its hot technologies. Name the ERP, POS or property system your industry uses by its exact name, such as Yardi in property management, and say what you built in it: a weekly labor report, a pricing dashboard, a forecast.

Certifications for general managers: Six Sigma, PMP and CFE

No license or certificate is required to hold a general manager title, so list certifications on your resume only when they fit the job ad: Six Sigma for plants and service operations, the PMP where you run capital or rollout projects, the CFE in franchising. Put each one under Certificates with the issuer and the month and year, plus any food safety or industry credential the business legally needs.

Certifications that help a general manager and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)ASQA full-time paid role, 3 years of work in the CSSBB Body of Knowledge, at least 1 completed Six Sigma project with a signed affidavit, and a 165-question exam.

Certified Franchise Executive (CFE)International Franchise Association (IFA)150 approved credits within 3 consecutive years, including IFA's Foundations of Franchising course and a final exam; renewed every 3 years.

Write the full name with the abbreviation the first time, as in the sample below. If a credential has lapsed, such as a CFE not renewed after 3 years, leave it off or list it with its end date.

How to list a business degree or MBA on a general manager resume

The BLS says top executives typically need a bachelor's or master's degree related to their field, and that executives at large corporations may hold an MBA. Plenty of GMs in restaurants, retail and services rise without a degree, so a strong record of running a business can stand in for one. Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date, with Education below Work Experience.

Put an MBA above your bachelor's degree, and if you earned it while working, keep the dates so a reader sees both at once. Drop the GPA once you have held a management role; a concentration such as finance or operations is worth 1 short line.

Moving up to general manager, or changing careers into the role

Most general and operations managers hired from outside a company, the BLS says, need lower-level supervisory or management experience in a related field. So the resume for your first GM role has to show you already handled pieces of one. Collect the evidence first:

  • Assistant GM or department manager work: the departments you ran, the budget you answered for and the weeks you covered for the GM.
  • A functional lead role: the product line, region or plant budget you owned as an engineering, sales or finance lead.
  • A turnaround or opening: a new location, a relaunch or a recovery you led, with the before and after.
  • An MBA or management program: listed under Education, with a capstone only if it used a real company's numbers.

Don't

Experienced finance professional looking to transition into a general management position.

Do

Plant finance director with 10 years in food manufacturing, seeking a general manager role. Ran budgeting and pricing for a $60M plant and led 9 analysts through an ERP migration. MBA, 2025.

A career-change objective still needs a dollar figure and a team size.

If you are coming from engineering, sales or finance, list your jobs newest first and lift your most business-wide bullets to the top of each one: budgets, pricing, hiring, customer accounts. A career-change resume works when your first GM role, however short, leads the page. Explain the move in your cover letter; the management cover letter examples show how to tie a functional background to a business you would run.

General Manager resume FAQ

What is the difference between a general manager and an operations manager resume?

A general manager resume shows ownership of results across sales, cost and people for a business unit, usually through department heads. An operations manager resume centers on running production, service or logistics well. If you owned revenue as well as cost, write it as a GM resume.

How long should a general manager resume be?

Use 1 page with under 5 years of GM experience. With 10+ years, several locations or a division, 2 pages are fine, provided page 1 carries your current role, its scope line and your strongest results.

How do I show P&L responsibility on a general manager resume?

Put the size of the P&L in the scope line under the job title, such as annual revenue and headcount. Then say which lines you controlled, like revenue, labor and controllable costs, and give each result a before and after.

How do I list several locations or business units on a general manager resume?

Keep 1 entry per employer and title, and give the total number of sites, combined revenue and people in the scope line. Use the bullets for results across the group, and name a single location only when a result belongs to it alone.

Do you need an MBA to be a general manager?

No. The BLS says top executives typically hold a bachelor's or master's degree and that those at large corporations may have an MBA, but many GMs in services, retail and restaurants are promoted on results. If you have an MBA, list it first under Education.

How do I go from assistant general manager to general manager on a resume?

Write the assistant GM role around the parts of the business you already ran: the departments, the budget and any stretch as acting GM. Add the weeks or months you covered, and target the summary at the GM title you want.

How should a franchise general manager list the employer?

List the franchisee company that paid you as the employer, with its city, and name the brand in the scope line. Then add results the brand tracks, such as audit scores or sales against the system, so a reader sees both the business and its standards.

How much do general managers make?

About $105,770 a year at the midpoint: that is the BLS median for general and operations managers in May 2025. Pay swings with the industry and the size of the business, so keep salary off the resume and raise it once an offer is on the table.
