17 Director Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

A CEO, VP or search firm hiring a director wants the size of what you ran, who you answered to, and results that held from one year to the next. Use these examples and the guide below to state your scope, put numbers on your results and place each credential where it gets read.

Director resume example

Director can mean a 6-person team at a startup or a function that spans several states and a budget in the tens of millions. What gets checked first is which one you held: the people and dollars you were responsible for, the executive you reported to, and what improved in the numbers after you took over. A strong director resume answers that in the first line under every job, then proves it with results measured across quarters and years.

How to Write a Director Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Go reverse-chronological, on 1 page or 2 once you have 10+ years, and keep your 2 latest roles on page 1.
  • Write the function into every title line, such as Director of Supply Chain, because Director alone tells an outside reader nothing.
  • Make the first bullet under each job its scope: budget, headcount, sites and the executive you reported to.
  • Give every other bullet a before and after with its base, in dollars, percent, days or customers.
  • List PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt or CMQ/OE under Certificates with the issuer and date, and keep Education short.
  • Leave personal details off, then test the file in an ATS resume checker before a search firm passes it on.

What executives look for in a director resume

The person hiring a director, usually a VP, a COO or a search firm working for one, reads your resume for scope first and outcome second. The BLS lists setting and carrying out departmental goals, overseeing budgets, appointing managers and analyzing performance indicators among the core duties of top executives. O*NET, which records Operations Director as one of the titles general and operations managers report, adds reviewing financial statements and activity reports to measure productivity.

Director is a level, not a field, so the same page has to explain your function to a reader from outside it. Organize it under headings any applicant tracking system recognizes:

  • Your name, contact details and a headline naming your function (Director of Supply Chain, PMP)
  • Summary of 2 to 3 lines under your name, with or without a heading
  • Work Experience, latest role first, each job opening on a scope bullet
  • Skills, with the systems you run your function in
  • Certificates
  • Education
  • Optional: Languages, plus one of Volunteer Experience and Key Achievements

Best format for a director resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format, with your current role on top and each entry giving the title, the employer, its location and dates in MM/YYYY form. A director's case rests on a climb from manager to senior manager to director, and on how long each result lasted, which only a dated timeline shows. Skills-first layouts hide both, so they rarely suit a director.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a director resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Once you have 10+ years, 2 pages is fine, provided page 1 holds your current role and the one before it. Many directors still fit 1 page by cutting jobs older than about 15 years to a line each. At the level above, a senior director resume follows the same rules with more scope in each entry, not more pages.

Director resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, or 2 with 10+ years; never 3
Title lineDirector plus the function: Director of Quality or Director, Client Services
First bulletScope: budget, headcount, sites and who you reported to
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY) on each role; Present on the current one
Personal informationNo photo is the norm in the US and Canada; leave off your date of birth, marital status and Social Security number
File typePDF, or .docx if a search firm or portal requests it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. At director level your file often travels from a recruiter to a hiring panel, so a clean, text-based layout that every system reads correctly matters more than any design flourish.

Director resume summary vs. objective

Use a resume summary if you already hold a director title or run a function under another name: 2 to 3 lines with your function, your years, your scope and your single best result. An objective only makes sense for a first director role, and even then it should name the team and budget you already run. Draft it last, once your bullets exist, and reuse the strongest figure they hold.

Director resume summary formula

Director title with X years leading function in industry. Scope: budget, people or sites. Your biggest result as a before and after, with the time it took.

Example

Director of Supply Chain with 14 years leading logistics for a home goods distributor. Runs a $38M budget and 115 people across 3 warehouses. Cut freight cost per order from $9.40 to $7.10 in 2 years while on-time shipping rose to 97%.

Don't

Results-driven director with a proven track record of leading high-performing teams and executing strategic initiatives.

Do

Director of Facilities at a 6-campus community college, running a $14M budget and 62 staff. Moved 40% of work orders onto preventive schedules and cut emergency repairs by 31% in 3 years.

This version names the function, the size of the operation and a result a VP of finance could check.

How to write director work experience bullets with numbers

Your current role takes 3 to 4 bullets; earlier roles take up to 4, fewer the older they are. The first bullet states the scope, so the rest can stay on results; each starts with a verb and carries a before and after or a figure with its base. Executives judge directors on outcomes that lasted, so show achievements on your resume in the measures your function already reports to leadership.

Numbers that prove director work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
BudgetSize, variance to plan, years heldKept a $22M operating budget within 1% of plan for 3 straight years.
PeopleManagers and staff, turnover, promotionsLed 4 managers and 60 staff and lowered regretted turnover from 19% to 8%.
GrowthRevenue, accounts, new marketsOpened a new region and grew it to $11M in annual revenue within 2 years.
CostDollars saved a year, sites, contractsSaved $1.8M a year by closing 1 leased site and moving its work to 2 others.
ProcessCycle time, error rates, service levelsShortened order-to-invoice cycle time from 21 to 9 days.
Change programsSystems, sites, months to finishConsolidated 5 legacy systems into 1 ERP in 14 months with no missed payroll.

Here is a director entry built that way. The opening bullet sets the scope, and the older role needs only 2 lines.

Director skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 skills that appear in the job ad and that your bullets demonstrate. A director's list mixes the leadership skills every executive is screened for with 2 or 3 skills from your own function, such as carrier management or service-level design.

Hard skills for directors

  • Budget ownership and forecasting
  • P&L management
  • Strategic and annual planning
  • KPI design and reporting
  • Vendor and contract negotiation
  • Organizational design
  • Change management
  • Process improvement
  • Hiring and succession planning
  • Board and executive reporting

Soft skills executives value in directors

  • Decision-making with incomplete data
  • Coaching managers
  • Cross-functional influence
  • Clear executive communication
  • Accountability for results
  • Negotiation

Name the systems you run your function in, each one also appearing in a bullet. O*NET lists Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Office as in-demand software for general and operations managers, and flags SAP, Salesforce, Tableau, Microsoft Project, Oracle PeopleSoft and Atlassian JIRA as hot technologies. Write the version the posting uses, such as SAP S/4HANA or Salesforce Service Cloud, and leave out tools you only approved invoices for.

PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt and CMQ/OE: certifications for a director resume

Most director roles carry no license of their own, so certifications work as evidence of method: how you run projects, improve processes or manage quality. Put certifications on your resume under Certificates with the full name, the issuer and the date earned. The 3 below are method credentials that fit many functions; add the credential your own function's ads name, such as a SHRM certification in HR.

Director certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Project Management Professional (PMP)Project Management Institute (PMI)With a 4-year degree, 36 months of experience leading and directing projects in the last 8 years (60 months with a secondary diploma or associate's degree), plus 35 contact hours of project management education or an active CAPM, then the exam.
Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB)ASQ3 years of full-time, paid work in areas of the CSSBB Body of Knowledge, completed projects backed by signed affidavits, and the exam.
Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE)ASQ10 years of work in areas of its Body of Knowledge, at least 5 of them in a decision-making position; 1 degree waiver cuts the 10 years (4 for a bachelor's, 5 for a master's), then the exam.

How to list a certification in progress or a lapsed one

A credential you are working toward goes under Certificates with the month of your scheduled exam, so the reader sees a date rather than a promise. A lapsed certification stays off the list: if the method still matters to the role, show it through a bullet that uses it instead. Keep credential letters out of your headline until the issuer confirms you passed.

Sample Certificates section: 2 earned, 1 scheduled

Certificates

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Project Management Institute, 04/2017
  • Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), ASQ, 09/2021
  • Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), ASQ, exam scheduled 03/2027

How to list an MBA and other degrees on a director resume

Top executives typically need at least a bachelor's degree and considerable work experience, the BLS says, adding that executives of large corporations may hold an MBA. Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and date, highest degree first, below Work Experience. Drop the GPA at this level.

An MBA earned part-time while you worked says something about how you manage time, so 1 note line can record it. An undergraduate degree in an unrelated subject needs no explanation; your director titles already answer the question a reader might have had.

Sample education entry: MBA earned while working

Education

Master of Business Administration (MBA)05/2018
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville | Knoxville, TN

Completed while working full time as a logistics manager.

BS in Business Administration05/2012
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville | Knoxville, TN

First-time, interim and career-change director resumes

Stepping up from senior manager, your resume has to show director work you already do under a smaller title. Owning a budget, appointing managers and setting goals may already be part of your job a level below director. Pull that evidence to the top of your current job:

  • Budget you own: its size and whether you built it, not only spent it.
  • Managers who report to you: how many, and any you hired or promoted.
  • Cross-functional work you led: a launch, a system change or a site opening, with its result.
  • Times you stood in for your director: how long, and the decisions you made.

Don't

Experienced manager seeking a director position where I can use my leadership skills.

Do

Senior manager with 5 years running a 28-person team and a $6M budget across 2 product lines, ready to lead customer operations as a director.

An objective at this stage still needs scope and a number.

An interim role gets its own entry with the word Interim in the title and its real dates, and its first bullet names the mandate: what you were brought in to fix and for how long. When you move into a director role from another field, such as the military, consulting or a clinical job, keep reverse-chronological order and translate titles into the scope they carried; a career-change resume leads with the most director-like bullets. Explain the reason for the move in the letter you send with it; these management cover letter examples show how to state it in a few sentences.

Director resume FAQ

How long should a director resume be?

1 page if your scope and results fit, or 2 pages once 10+ years of experience run longer. Keep your current and previous roles on page 1, and cut jobs older than about 15 years to 1 line each. Nobody at this level needs a third page.

What title should I use if my title was just Director?

Keep the official title and add the function after a comma, such as Director, Supply Chain. A reference or background check still matches, and a recruiter searching for a supply chain director finds you. Never upgrade the level itself, for example to Senior Director.

How do I list an interim director role on my resume?

As its own Work Experience entry, with Interim in the title and the dates you actually served. Open with the mandate, such as stabilizing a team after a departure or running a function during a search, then give the results you delivered in that time.

How do I show a promotion from manager to director at the same company?

List each title as its own entry under the same employer, newest first, with its own dates and bullets. The director entry gets the fuller scope and 3 to 4 bullets, while the manager entry keeps 1 to 2, so the step up is visible at a glance.

Is a director the same as a member of a board of directors?

No. A director title is a management role inside a company, usually reporting to a VP or a C-level executive. A board member, also called a board director, oversees the company's management on behalf of its shareholders. If you hold a board seat, add it as 1 line in your summary or under Key Achievements.

How far back should a director resume go?

Give full entries to about the last 15 years, which usually covers every role with management scope. Earlier jobs can shrink to 1 line each with title, employer and dates, or drop off when they add nothing to the director story you are telling.

Do I need an MBA to become a director?

No. The BLS says top executives typically need at least a bachelor's degree and considerable work experience, and notes that executives of large corporations may hold an MBA. For most director roles, a record of budgets run and results delivered weighs more than the degree.

Which certifications help a director resume?

The ones your target postings name. PMP from the Project Management Institute fits directors who run programs and projects, ASQ's Six Sigma Black Belt fits process and operations roles, and ASQ's CMQ/OE fits quality leadership. Function-specific credentials, such as SHRM certifications for HR, matter more in their own fields.

Should a director resume have a Key Achievements section?

Only for results that cross jobs or sit outside them, such as a board seat, an award from a trade association or a company-wide program you led. Results from a specific role belong in that role's bullets, where the reader sees the scope behind them.

How much does a director make?

The closest BLS benchmark is $105,770, the median annual pay of general and operations managers in May 2025. The BLS tracks no single director occupation, and pay moves with function, industry and company size. Keep salary expectations off the resume itself.
