Our Research Methods

Novorésumé studies are built on four kinds of data. Most use one; some combine two, such as Google searches and government job projections.

Surveys

We survey US adults, full-time workers and job seekers on the Pollfish survey platform, and survey Novorésumé users and HR professionals. Each survey study gives its sample size, its field dates and how the sample was balanced or weighted.

Used in

Official data

We work from government sources, in their latest release: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (job projections, wages and job counts by county), O*NET and the UK Government's Gender Pay Gap Service.

Used in

Monthly Google search counts from Google Ads data, by phrase and by US state, show how many people look something up. We use counts of searches, not Google Trends' 0 to 100 index.

Used in

Platform data

Public listings on job and freelance platforms, drawn at random and sorted by what each listing asks for.

How Every Study Is Made

Each study goes through the same five steps before it is published.

  1. Pick a question and test it

Each study starts from a question about resumes, job search or work. A small pilot checks that the data exists and can answer it before the study is built.

  2. Go to the original source

Figures come from the survey, agency or platform that produced them, in its latest release.

  3. Compare like with like

Rankings divide by size: searches per opening, jobs per 1,000 private jobs, share of all projects. Places and jobs below a minimum size are left out of rankings.

  4. Check each finding a second way

Data studies are tested against another period, definition or source before they are published. Survey studies report their sample sizes, and national samples their margin of error.

  5. Publish the method with the results

Each study states its source, period, sample and calculation. Studies in this section also carry their full tables, as CSV downloads, and their charts.
