Marketing resume example

Hiring managers in marketing look past job duties to the work itself: the channels you ran, the budget you managed, the platforms you know and what your campaigns brought in. Most marketers have numbers to show. The harder part is choosing the ones that match the role, since one posting asks for paid search and the next for email. This guide shows how to build each section around the right results.

How to Write a Marketing Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Put your newest role first in a reverse-chronological layout and keep it to 1 page; a second page fits only after 10+ years or a move into management.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your channels, your industry, your platforms and 1 result with its base.
  • Put the channel and the budget or audience size early in each bullet, and end it with the number that moved: CPA, ROAS, click rate, leads or revenue.
  • Name platforms exactly as the job ad does, such as GA4, HubSpot, Salesforce or Google Ads, in Skills and again inside a bullet.
  • List Google, HubSpot and AMA certifications under Certificates with the month you earned them, and drop any that have expired.
  • Keep the layout plain enough to parse, then test the file with an ATS resume checker before you send it.

What hiring managers look for in a marketing resume

The BLS lists measuring the effectiveness of marketing programs, gathering data on consumers and competitors, and presenting results to clients and management as core duties for market research analysts. O*NET adds search marketing tactics and web metrics analysis for marketing specialists.

Marketing covers many jobs, so the posting tells you which of those count. Pull the resume keywords it repeats, such as paid social, lifecycle email or demand generation, and put each one in a bullet that proves it. Then build the page from these sections:

  • Name, headline (for example, Digital Marketing Specialist, Paid Search) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line summary at the top, which needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, newest role first, with your main channel in the first bullet
  • Skills, with your marketing platforms named
  • Certificates, such as Google Ads, Google Analytics or HubSpot
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience, Languages or Interests

Best format for a marketing resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current role first, each entry with your title, the company, where it is based and dates written as MM/YYYY. Marketing hires are judged on recent results and on the climb from coordinator to specialist to manager, and this order puts both at the top. Career changers keep this order too, with their most marketing-heavy tasks first.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a marketing resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page until you pass 10 years in marketing. 2 pages fit a manager or director who has run a team, a large budget and several channels, provided page 1 holds the current role and its biggest result. Agency staff with many clients group them under 1 entry per agency instead of listing each account as a job.

Marketing resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with 10+ years or a team and budget to show
DatesMM/YYYY on every role, and Present on the one you hold now
Job title lineTitle plus focus where it helps: Marketing Specialist, Paid Social
DesignA clean layout with 1 accent color; visual work belongs in your portfolio
Photo and birth dateA photo is uncommon in the US and Canada; leave off birth date and marital status
File typePDF, or a Word file when the applicant portal asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and marketing follows the same norm. A heavily designed page proves nothing about your campaigns, while a layout the screening software cannot read can keep your file from ever reaching a person.

Marketing resume summary vs. objective

Use a single test: if you have been paid to do marketing work, write a resume summary; if you have not, write an objective. A summary gives your level, your channels, your platforms and 1 result. An objective gives the role you want and the best proof you have so far, such as an internship, a student account you grew or a certification. Write it after your bullets and take its strongest number from them.

Marketing resume summary formula

Title with X years in industry or type of employer, running channels in platforms. Your best result, with its number and base. Certification or specialty.

Example

Marketing specialist with 8 years in direct-to-consumer retail and agency work, running paid search, email and social in Google Ads, Klaviyo and GA4. Lifted the repeat-purchase rate from 24% to 31% in 2 years with a loyalty email program. Google Ads Search certified.

Don't

Creative, results-oriented marketer with a passion for storytelling and building brands people love.

Do

B2B marketing coordinator with 3 years at a software agency, running LinkedIn and HubSpot campaigns for 9 clients. Built a webinar nurture sequence that turned 14% of sign-ups into sales meetings.

The rewrite gives a level, a setting, the platforms, a scale and a result a manager can check.

How to write marketing work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current role 3 to 4 bullets and older ones 1 to 3, each starting with a verb. Every channel already reports numbers, so pick the one your next manager watches: cost per acquisition for paid media, click rate for email, organic sessions for SEO, pipeline for B2B. Write achievements on your resume with a before and after, a time frame and a base, such as the budget or the list size.

Numbers that prove marketing work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Paid mediaMonthly spend, CPA, ROAS, conversion rateManaged $15K a month across 3 Google Ads campaigns at a 4.2 ROAS.
Email and lifecycleList size, click rate, revenue per send, flows builtRaised the weekly newsletter's click rate from 1.8% to 3.1% by splitting the list into 5 segments.
Content and SEOPieces published, organic sessions, rankings, sign-upsPublished 36 product guides in a year; organic sessions rose from 12,000 to 27,000 a month.
Social mediaFollowers, engagement rate, referral trafficLifted Instagram engagement from 1.2% to 2.6% with a weekly short-video series.
Events and B2BEvents run, qualified leads, pipelineRan 4 trade show booths that produced 310 qualified leads and $480K in pipeline.
Testing and researchTests run, survey responses, cost per leadRan 12 A/B tests on landing pages; the winning form cut cost per lead by 18%.

Here is a marketing specialist's entry built from that table. The current role covers paid media, email and analytics at a consumer brand, and the older agency job gets 2 lines.

Sample entry: marketing specialist at a pet supply brand

Work Experience

Don't

Helped increase website traffic through SEO.

Do

Rewrote title tags and meta descriptions for 220 category pages; organic clicks in Google Search Console rose 41% in 6 months.

Marketing skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting that your bullets already prove, and let your results show the soft skills. A generalist role asks for range across email, social and paid media; a specialist role wants depth in 1 channel and its tools.

Hard skills for marketers

  • Campaign planning
  • Paid search (PPC)
  • Paid social advertising
  • Email marketing and automation
  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Content strategy and copywriting
  • Marketing analytics and attribution
  • A/B testing
  • Market research and surveys
  • Budget management

Soft skills marketing managers value

  • Clear, concise writing
  • Creative judgment
  • Decisions based on data
  • Collaboration with sales and design
  • Running several launches at once
  • Presenting results to leadership

List your platforms with your skills, then name each one again in a bullet that shows what you did with it. O*NET flags Google Analytics, Salesforce, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Excel as in-demand technology for market research analysts and marketing specialists, and lists HubSpot, Marketo, WordPress and Tableau as hot technology. If the posting names a tool you know, such as Klaviyo or Semrush, use its exact spelling.

Write each platform by the name it had while you used it. Google AdWords became Google Ads in June 2018, and standard Universal Analytics stopped processing data on July 1, 2023, when GA4 replaced it. A role that ended in 2021 can mention Universal Analytics reports; your current Skills list says GA4.

Google, HubSpot and AMA certifications on a marketing resume

Marketing has no license, so certifications are how you show channel skills a hiring manager can check. List certifications on your resume under Certificates with the issuer and the month you earned each one. The BLS describes certification for market research analysts as voluntary and as a way to demonstrate professional competency; for platform roles, the Google and HubSpot credentials a posting names carry the most weight.

Marketing certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Google Ads certifications (Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads, Apps)Google, through SkillshopPass the assessment for each product area. Each certification stays valid for 1 year, and you renew it by passing the assessment again.
Google Analytics CertificationGoogle, through SkillshopPass the Analytics assessment on Skillshop; Google's 4 Analytics Academy courses prepare you. Skillshop shows its expiry date.
HubSpot Inbound Marketing CertificationHubSpot AcademyEarned through HubSpot Academy and valid for 2 years, like HubSpot's Email Marketing and Content Marketing certifications; the SEO certification lasts 1 year.
Professional Certified Marketer (PCM): Marketing Management, Digital Marketing or Content MarketingAmerican Marketing Association (AMA)No eligibility requirements, though AMA suggests a bachelor's degree and 4 years of marketing work. The Marketing Management exam has 150 questions in 3 hours with 70% to pass; renewal every 3 years takes 30 CEUs.

How to list certifications that expire

Write the month you passed each certification, renew the ones your target roles ask for, and delete any that have lapsed instead of leaving an old date for a recruiter to question. An exam you have already booked can go on the list as scheduled, with its date.

Sample Certificates section: platform certifications and a PCM exam booked

Certificates

  • Google Ads Search Certification, Google, 03/2026
  • Google Analytics Certification, Google, 01/2026
  • HubSpot Email Marketing Certification, HubSpot Academy, 09/2025
  • Professional Certified Marketer (PCM), Digital Marketing, American Marketing Association, scheduled 12/2026

How to list a marketing degree on your resume

According to the BLS, market research analysts typically need a bachelor's degree in market research or a related business, communications or social science field, and marketing managers usually hold a bachelor's degree in a business field such as marketing, or in communications. Managers also typically come up through advertising, marketing, promotions or sales jobs, which is why Work Experience moves above Education once you have it.

Give the degree, the school, its city and the graduation date, following the usual rules for listing education on a resume. A GPA earns its place only in your first 2 years out of school and only at 3.5 or above. A recent graduate can add 1 line of coursework that used real tools, such as a marketing analytics class taught in Google Analytics or a research project in SPSS.

Sample education entry: marketing degree with tool-based coursework

Education

B.S. in Marketing05/2018
University of South Florida | Tampa, FL

Coursework in marketing analytics and consumer research, with projects in Google Analytics and Tableau.

Entry-level and career-change marketing resumes

Without a paid marketing job yet, use an entry-level resume layout: a short objective, Education near the top, then proof that you can run a channel. Treat each item like a job and give it the same kind of numbers.

  • Marketing internships: campaigns you supported, posts you published, reports you built and what they showed.
  • Student or club accounts: followers gained, events promoted and attendance, listed under Volunteer Experience.
  • Freelance or family-business work: the business, the channel, the budget and what changed in sales or bookings.
  • Certifications: a Google or HubSpot certificate earned on your own time, listed under Certificates with its month.

Don't

Recent marketing graduate looking for an opportunity to grow my skills.

Do

Marketing graduate seeking a marketing coordinator role. Ran the student union's Instagram for 2 years, growing it to 4,800 followers, and holds the HubSpot Inbound Marketing certification.

An objective still needs proof: a channel, a number and a credential.

Coming from sales, customer service, journalism or graphic design, keep reverse-chronological order and open with a summary that names the marketing work you already do, such as writing product copy, running a store's social account or tracking lead sources in Salesforce. A career-change resume works when the first bullets under your current job are its most marketing-heavy tasks. Marketing resume FAQ

How long should a marketing resume be?

1 page for most marketers with under 10 years of experience. Use 2 pages once you have managed a team, a large budget or several channels over 10+ years, and keep your current role and its biggest result on page 1.

What metrics should I put on a marketing resume?

Use the metrics your target role is judged on. Paid media roles look for spend, cost per acquisition and ROAS; email roles for list size, click rate and revenue per send; SEO roles for organic sessions and rankings; B2B roles for leads and pipeline. Give each number a time frame and a base.

Which certifications help a marketing resume?

The ones the posting names. Google Ads and Google Analytics certifications from Skillshop fit paid search and analytics roles, HubSpot Academy certifications fit inbound and email work, and AMA's Professional Certified Marketer credentials fit generalist and management roles. List each with its issuer and month.

Should a marketing resume have a creative design?

Only a light touch. A single accent color and clean headings suit most marketing jobs, but graphics, icon rows or text placed inside images can stop an applicant tracking system from reading your resume. Keep visual work in your portfolio and the resume easy to parse.

How do I list agency experience with many clients?

Give each agency 1 Work Experience entry with your title and dates, then write bullets about your client groups or biggest accounts: how many clients, their industries, the budgets you ran and the results. Name a client only if the agency allows it; otherwise describe it, such as a regional bank with 40 branches.

How do I write a marketing resume with no experience?

Start with an objective that names the role and your best proof, then put Education, internships and any channel you have run yourself near the top. A student club's Instagram, a freelance project for a local shop or a HubSpot certification all count once you give them numbers.

Should I list every marketing tool I have used?

No. List the platforms the job ad names that you could use from day 1, and prove each one inside a bullet. A long row of tools you tried once makes it harder for the reader to find the 4 or 5 that matter for the role.

How do I show a team result on a marketing resume?

Say what you owned inside it. Write the shared result and then your part, such as building the landing pages for a launch that reached 2,300 sign-ups in 4 weeks. A hiring manager trusts a team number more when your role in it is clear.

How much do marketing specialists earn?

The median annual wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists was $78,760 in May 2025, according to the BLS. Pay varies with your channel, industry, city and level; keep it off your resume and discuss it when an offer is on the table.
