Cashier resume example

For many shoppers, the cashier is the only person they speak to in a store, and managers hire with that in mind. Register skills are the start. They also look for accurate cash and card handling, a line that keeps moving and a friendly manner on busy shifts. Because register work looks simple from outside, the scale of yours deserves a place: customers served a shift, how close your drawer comes at closing and every payment type you take.

How to Write a Cashier Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep to 1 page, newest job first, and give each job its store, its city and its MM/YYYY dates.
  • Open with 2 or 3 lines that name your years at the register, the store type and your best accuracy or volume number.
  • Count what the front end counts: customers per shift, items scanned per minute, drawer variance, sign-ups and ID checks.
  • Name your point-of-sale system and the payment types you take, such as cash, card, contactless and SNAP EBT.
  • List a food handler, alcohol seller or RISE Up credential under Certificates, with its issuer and date.
  • Leave out private details such as your birth date, then upload the finished file to an ATS resume checker before you apply online.

What hiring managers look for in a cashier resume

A front-end manager reads your resume for proof that your drawer comes out right, that customers leave your lane happy, and that you follow the rules on refunds, coupons and ID checks. The BLS lists processing payments and giving change, handling returns and exchanges, and counting the register at the start and end of each shift as core cashier duties. O*NET adds reconciling the payments you took against total sales and resolving customer complaints.

Store type matters too. BLS figures show cashiers held about 3.1 million jobs in 2025: 30% worked at food and beverage retailers such as grocery stores, and 19% at gasoline stations. A grocery manager reads for speed on a busy lane, while a gas station or convenience store manager reads for solo shifts, lottery and age checks. Put these sections on the page:

  • Your name and a headline (Cashier, Lead Cashier), then phone, email and city
  • A 2- or 3-line summary or objective at the top, with no heading
  • Work Experience, newest job at the top
  • Skills, with your register system and payment types
  • Certificates, if you hold a food handler, alcohol seller or retail credential
  • Education
  • Optional extras: Languages, Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience

Best format for a cashier resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your newest job first, each with the job title, the store and its location, plus the months you began and left, written as MM/YYYY. Cashier jobs often overlap or come in brief seasonal stretches, and this layout lets a manager see at a glance how long you stayed and where. Keep the same order if you are coming from another field: a strong summary does the explaining, not a skills-first layout.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a cashier resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

A 1-page resume is enough for almost every cashier, lead cashier and front-end supervisor. If you have more than 4 jobs, keep the 3 most relevant ones in full and fold short or very old jobs into 1 line each, or drop them.

Store lineStore name, a pipe, then the city and state: Quintaver Grocers | Dayton, OH
DatesMM/YYYY on every job; write Present for the one you still hold
Store typeSay grocery, pharmacy, convenience, hardware or department store in the summary or the first bullet
Type and spacing1 clean, readable font, body text between 10 and 12 pt, margins of at least 0.5 inch
Photo, age and ID numbersUsually none in the US and Canada; skip your date of birth, family status and SSN
File typePDF by email; paste plain text when a store's online application gives you only a text box

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A page with plain section names also stays readable when a store's online application system pulls your details out of the file.

Cashier resume summary vs. objective

Ask 1 question: have you been paid to run a register? If yes, write a resume summary that names your years, your store type and 1 number. If not, write an objective that names the job you want and the closest proof you have, such as handling a cash box or serving customers. Browse resume objective examples to see how short a good one is, then write yours last, once your bullets are done.

Cashier resume summary formula

Title with X years in store type, your volume per shift. Your best accuracy, speed or sign-up figure. Credential, language or the shifts you can work.

Example

Cashier with 5 years in grocery and hardware retail, checking out about 220 customers on a weekday shift. Balanced the drawer within $1 on 248 of 250 shifts in 2025. ServSafe Food Handler certified and available for closing shifts.

Don't

Hardworking and friendly cashier with excellent customer service skills, looking for a position with room to grow.

Do

Cashier with 2 years at a busy pharmacy front counter, serving about 150 customers a shift. Balanced the drawer on every shift in 2026 and handled photo ID checks on all tobacco sales.

This version names the store type, a daily volume and a result a manager can check.

How to write cashier work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job gets 3 to 4 bullets and each older job up to 4, every one opening on a verb. Your store already measures you, through register reports, drawer counts and sign-up tallies, so pull your numbers from there rather than guessing. Write achievements on your resume instead of a list of duties: every cashier scans items, but not every cashier closes 180 shifts in a row without a shortage.

Numbers that prove cashier work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
SpeedItems scanned per minute, customers per hour, your rank on the front endKept checkout at 30 items a minute during weekend peaks, top 3 on a 12-person front end.
Drawer accuracyShifts balanced, overs and shorts, variance in dollarsClosed 180 straight shifts with the drawer within $2 of the register report.
VolumeTransactions and dollar sales per shiftHandled about 160 transactions and $5,400 in sales on a typical Saturday shift.
Sign-upsRewards members, store credit card accounts, donation round-upsOpened 22 store credit card accounts in November and December 2025.
Age-restricted salesID checks, compliance checks passedVerified ID on every alcohol and tobacco sale; passed 2 of 2 state compliance checks in 2025.
Customer issuesPrice disputes, coupon problems, returns settled at the registerSettled 10 to 15 price and coupon disputes a week without calling a manager.
TrainingNew cashiers trained, shifts ledTrained 6 new cashiers on the register and cash-out steps in their first 2 weeks.

A weekly count and a variance turn a duty into a record.

Don't

Provided excellent customer service to all customers.

Do

Resolved price-check and coupon issues for about 40 customers a week, calling a manager only for refunds over $50.

Cashier skills and POS systems for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 skills from the job ad that a bullet on your resume already backs up. Hard skills cover the register itself; for the people side, pick the customer service skills your bullets show in action, such as calming a customer over a wrong price.

Hard skills for cashiers

  • Cash handling and making change
  • POS operation
  • Card, contactless and mobile payments
  • SNAP EBT and coupon processing
  • Opening and closing drawer counts
  • Returns, exchanges and voids
  • Age verification for restricted sales
  • Price checks and overrides
  • Self-checkout monitoring
  • Rewards and store card sign-ups

Soft skills front-end managers value

  • Patience with upset customers
  • Quick mental math
  • Reliability on scheduled shifts
  • Clear, friendly communication
  • Teamwork on a busy front end
  • Stamina for long shifts on your feet

Write your register system by its name, such as Square, Clover, NCR or Toast, whichever one the job ad mentions and you have used. O*NET's task list for cashiers includes redeeming food stamps and coupons, so name SNAP EBT if you take it. O*NET also flags Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office as hot technology for the job; list them only if you used them for real work, such as a shift sales log or a cash-out sheet.

Food handler, alcohol seller and retail certificates for cashiers

No license is needed to work a register, but a short credential can tip a decision when the store sells food, alcohol or tobacco. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and the month and year, and drop any that has expired.

Certificates that help a cashier resume
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
ServSafe Food HandlerNational Restaurant AssociationOnline training, then the ServSafe Food Handler Assessment, which does not need a proctor. Useful for deli, bakery, concession and cafe counters.
TABC Seller-Server Certification (Texas)Texas Alcoholic Beverage CommissionAn approved seller training course. Valid for 2 years from issue; Texas law does not require it, but many employers do. Other states run their own programs.
RISE Up credentials, such as Customer Service and Sales or Customer Conflict De-escalationNRF FoundationTraining plus an industry-recognized exam for each credential, built for entry-level retail and service jobs.

How to show ID checks and age-restricted sales

Federal law has set 21 as the minimum age to buy tobacco products since Dec. 20, 2019, and since Sept. 30, 2024 the FDA has required retailers to check photo ID for anyone under 30. If you sell tobacco or alcohol, put that in a bullet with a result, such as compliance checks passed, and list any state seller course under Certificates.

  • RISE Up Customer Conflict De-escalation, NRF Foundation, 09/2025

How to list a high school diploma or GED on a cashier resume

The BLS says cashiers typically need no formal education to start, though employers may prefer applicants who finished high school, and training happens on the job and may last up to a few weeks. Write education on your resume with the diploma first, then the school and its city, then the month you graduated. A GED or another high school equivalency goes in the same spot, with the year you earned it.

Still in high school? Write the expected graduation date, and add a line only if it helps at the register, such as a business class or a school store shift. Once you have a year of paid work, Education moves below Work Experience and stays at 1 or 2 lines.

Cashier resumes with no experience or from another career

For a first job, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, with Education high on the page, then any work that shows you can handle money and people. A high school resume template keeps it to 1 tidy page. Give each item a number, just as you would for a paid job.

  • Cash boxes and fundraisers: concession stands, bake sales or car washes, with the nights worked and the money counted.
  • Food service or babysitting jobs: customers served, shifts worked, cash or tips handled.
  • Volunteering at a thrift store or food pantry: hours a week and what you did at the counter, under Volunteer Experience.
  • A second language: under Languages, with your level, since it helps wherever the store's customers speak it.

Don't

High school student looking for my first job to gain work experience.

Do

High school senior seeking a weekend cashier role. Ran the cash box for 6 football-season concession nights, counting about $1,300 in sales, and can work Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Even a first-job objective needs proof: money handled, a count and the hours you can work.

Coming from a call center, a restaurant or a warehouse, stay with newest-first order and use your summary to connect the 2 jobs. Call center work maps closely onto the register: calls per hour, complaints settled and offers accepted read the same as customers per shift, disputes resolved and sign-ups. A career-change resume works best when the first bullets of your old job show that customer work. Save the reason for the switch for your cover letter; our retail cover letter examples show how to say it in 2 sentences.

Cashier resume FAQ

What should I put on a cashier resume with no experience?

Put an objective, your education and any proof that you can handle money and people: a concession stand or fundraiser cash box, food service or babysitting jobs, or volunteer counter work. Add a number to each, such as nights worked or dollars counted, and name the shifts you can work.

How long should a cashier resume be?

1 page. Even with 10+ years at the register, a store manager needs your last 2 or 3 jobs, your accuracy and volume numbers, your systems and your certificates, and all of that fits on 1 page. Cut older jobs to 1 line or drop them.

What skills should a cashier list on a resume?

List 6 to 8 skills the job ad names and your bullets prove: cash handling, POS operation, card and contactless payments, SNAP EBT, drawer counts, returns, age verification and price checks. Add 2 or 3 people skills, such as patience with upset customers, and show them in a bullet.

Should I put my scan rate on a cashier resume?

Yes, if your store measured it. An items-per-minute figure from your register reports, or your rank among the store's cashiers, shows speed better than the word fast. If no one tracked it, use customers or transactions per shift instead and never guess a figure.

Do cashiers need a certification?

No, not to work a register. A food handler card, a state alcohol seller course or a RISE Up credential from the NRF Foundation can help where the store sells food, alcohol or tobacco, or when you have little paid experience. Texas, for example, does not require its TABC seller certification by law, but many employers do.

How do I list 2 part-time cashier jobs held at the same time?

Give each job its own entry with its own dates, and put the one you started most recently first. Bullets on each should show different work, such as volume at the grocery store and lottery or ID checks at the gas station, so the 2 entries do not read as a single job written twice.

How do I show I am ready for a lead cashier role?

Show the lead work you already do: new cashiers trained, breaks and lanes covered when the supervisor was out, drawer counts or cash pickups you handled and closing duties you own. Put those in your first bullets, and name the role you want in your headline and summary.

How much do cashiers make?

BLS data puts the median hourly wage for cashiers at $15.81 in May 2025, or $32,880 a year. Your pay depends on your state, the store and your shifts. Keep pay off your resume and give it only when the application form or the interview asks.

Can a cashier job help a resume for a bank teller position?

Yes. Banks want accurate cash handling and good service, which register work proves. Lead with your drawer accuracy record, the dollar amounts you handled each shift and any cash office or deposit duties. Mention counterfeit-bill checks or check-cashing rules you followed, since tellers apply both every day.
