What do companies expect to see in on an architect CV?

Most of the recruiters agree that they would like to see the jobs you had until now, a list of the different projects you have done in your different jobs or during your education and it is really important to highlight your main responsibilities/achievements and the role you had on each specific project.

Is there a difference between a Graduate Architect's Resume and a Senior Architect's Resume?

The main difference has been highlighted by one of the recruiters as:

“I would say that when it's a senior architect CV it requires more work because we look more in the CV when it's a Senior employee, we would look very careful at what kind of experience you had, which companies, what role you had played in the different projects and also look at the dates, for how long time have you been in the different projects. If the CV is followed by a portfolio, then it is fine with the CV to be just text, but if you do only a CV then you should have pictures from the most important projects. But I would always recommend to send a portfolio.

The other way around, if it's a junior architect that recently graduated, then the CV would be very short and that's also ok, we will look even more in the portfolio, because the work in the portfolio will be more personal. For a Senior would be work that has been created at a Company, so it can be difficult to see what is your skill or the company's; but if it's a junior architect it will often be created by themselves, so it will represent them as an architect.

Which is also why when I receive an application I always look at the portfolio first.

What is the Length for an Architecture Resume?

  • The majority of the recruiters interviewed by us agreed that the maximum length for a graduate architect resume is 1 page and the ideal number of pages for a senior architect resume is 1 to maximum 2 pages (excluding the portfolio).

What Are the Most Important Skills?

Firstly, you will need that you are very good in designing, you have an aesthetics flair and a graphic flair, and you know what looks good. This can be already proven by the design of your job application and portfolio.

An important skill that was highlighted by some of the recruiters, is your ability to explain and write a story about the projects you have created, otherwise they will start asking if you really understand why you did what you did.

Another important skills is Teamwork as most companies work and create together in a cooperative environment, and they will spot already from the interview if you are a person who cannot work well with others.

As a final advice for writing your architecture resume, one of the recruiters has suggested that “when you make a CV, you should actually look at the webpage of the company you are applying. And of course, if you go to our homepage everything is Scandinavian style with the tone down colours, very simple. So of course then you shouldn't make a CV with a pink background. But of course other companies might love pink, then of course you should do it. You should look at the homepage and then mirror the style and then you will catch our eye.

The following architecture resume example has been created using executive resume template personalized for applying at a Scandinavian architecture firm. You can choose the same resume template and tailor it to the visual identity of the company you are applying for in an intuitive and playful process.
